The skinny borders along a walk or house are often challenging to plan and plant. The proportions of a large house next to a small planting area create an awkward space that is out of balance. Here are two easy solutions for these areas.
1) Three narrow, tall plants with smaller infill of perennials. Good options for the tall plants include, grasses, 'Skypencil' Holly, and some varieties of boxwood. Boxwood and holly will tolerate some shade while the grass will need to be full sun. Use this option for a more modern or formal garden style.
2) Add a trellis with a vine for height and infill with perennials. Bamboo can be a simple, inexpensive trellis, or opt for something fancier. Good vine options include clematis, honeysuckle, or porcelain berry for a shady area. These vines good climbers without being overly aggressive and causing siding damage. Use this option for a more informal, cottage garden look.
