Let Go and Let… Glutes?

Sometimes the pain you’re feeling isn’t actually where the problem starts.

A client recently came in struggling with recurring low back tightness during exercise. The instinct is often to focus on the back itself—but what if the back is simply doing a job it was never meant to do?

When our hips can’t effectively manage load and movement, the body finds another way. The low back tightens. The shoulders brace. The neck works overtime. Compensation becomes the strategy.

That’s where my favorite new coaching cue came from:

“Let Go and Let Glutes.”

(Yes, it’s a terrible dad joke. No, I’m not sorry.)

The reality is that many of us spend our lives trying to control movement by creating tension. We tighten, brace, guard, and grip because our bodies don’t trust what’s happening underneath.

But lasting change often requires something different:

➡️ Letting go of unnecessary tension
➡️ Creating awareness of movement patterns
➡️ Allowing the right muscles to do the work
➡️ Building better movement from the ground up

More stretching isn’t always the answer.
More strengthening isn’t always the answer.

Sometimes the missing piece is learning how to stop fighting your body and start working with it.

The next time your back tightens during a workout, your knees ache on a run, or your shoulders creep up toward your ears, pause for a moment.

Ask yourself:

What am I holding onto that I might need to let go of?

You might be surprised by the answer.

Dr. Dante here,

Today was a big day for me! First training swim in about 11 months.

On July 5, 2025 I ended up in the ER with a broken collarbone. At the time, I could tell I had a significant injury, and I went through some real emotional struggles. I wasn’t sure I was ever going to be able to do this again.

I’ve been working hard to get my body ready for this day. It wasn’t perfect, but I proved to myself I can do it.

Looking forward to doing my next triathlon later this year!

Why We Focus on Your Breathing

Breathing is something you do thousands of times every day.

But just because it’s automatic doesn’t mean it’s optimal.

Many of the issues people struggle with—tight neck and shoulders, low back tension, poor recovery, chronic stress, fatigue, and even recurring pain—can be connected to the way they breathe.

When breathing becomes shallow and chest-dominant, your body can interpret it as a stress signal. Over time, that keeps your nervous system stuck in a low-level fight-or-flight state, influencing everything from posture and mobility to recovery and pain sensitivity.

Your diaphragm isn’t just a breathing muscle. It’s connected to your core, low back, hips, and pelvic floor. When it isn’t functioning well, the body starts compensating:

➡️ Neck and shoulder muscles work overtime
➡️ Posture begins to change
➡️ Movement becomes less efficient
➡️ Tension and discomfort build over time

That’s why at Movement Redefined, breathing is often one of the first things we assess.

Not because breathing is a magic fix.

Because it’s one of the foundational pieces that influences how your entire body moves, feels, and performs.

If you’ve tried stretching, strengthening, massage, or other treatments without lasting results, your breathing mechanics may be the missing piece of the puzzle.

Breathe well. Move well. Live fully. 💙
