Virginia is known as the birthplace of presidents, generals, and innovators such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Patrick Henry, and George C. Marshall. Here in the Roanoke Valley, local history is preserved every day at Evergreen Memorial Trust, where generations of families have created a lasting connection to our region's story. History is not just something we read about. It is something we remember. Every monument, marker, and memorial helps tell the story of the people who built our communities, served our nation, raised families, and left a legacy worth preserving.

This Day in Virginia History

On June 17, 1882, the Norfolk and Western Railway continued its expansion through the Roanoke Valley, helping transform the small community of Big Lick into what would soon become the City of Roanoke. The growth of the railroad brought new families, businesses, industries, and opportunities that shaped the region for generations to come.

Much of the history of the Roanoke Valley is connected to the people who built lives here, raised families here, and became part of the lasting story of this community. At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we are proud to serve places where local history, remembrance, and community continue to come together every day.
