Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, the news didn’t reach Texas until June 19th, 1865. Therefore, Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of those who were still enslaved in the United States. The first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas on June 19th, 1866, and we celebrate it since.

On Thursday, May 21st, ‘Sankofa’ will be playing at the Philly Film Showcase. After the film, there will be a Zoom Q&A session with all featured filmmakers.
