Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville, VA, this restored 1870s log cabin retreat feels like stepping into another era — with modern comfort woven in.

This unique Commonwealth Home Design project combined historic preservation, adaptive design, and creative problem-solving to transform two original cabins into one unforgettable mountain getaway.

The result is a warm, rustic-modern escape surrounded by 400 acres of woods, complete with a glass-walled great room, expansive porch, stone fireplaces, and a classic “dog trot” design reimagined for modern living.

Even better? You can actually stay here! (See link in comments)

If you’re looking for a close-but-feels-worlds-away weekend getaway, the cabin is available to rent for winery weekends, family gatherings, UVA events, or simply unplugging for a few days in the mountains.

Projects like this showcase the versatility of our team and the kind of creative, detail-driven thinking that thoughtful remodeling and restoration work require.

From dark, dated finishes and heavy contrast to a bright, refreshed kitchen designed for modern living. 🪄✨

This recently completed remodel transformed a 1998 Vienna brick colonial with lighter finishes, improved flow, and a more open, updated feel while still honoring the scale and character of the home.

The oversized island, layered neutrals, warm wood flooring, and soft natural light through a gridless window completely changed the energy of the space.

More before-and-afters from this transformation coming soon. 👀

Commonwealth Home Design was proud to sponsor Wolftrap Elementary’s Pajama Jog 5K and Fun Run again this year. 🛌🏃‍♀️🌙

The event supports the Wolftrap PTA in raising essential funds to enrich students’ educational experience — with plenty of fun throughout the day, including the race, music, awards, cake walk, basket raffles, post-race treats, and, of course, lots of pajamas.

Wolftrap also holds a special place in Commonwealth Home Design’s story. Owner and architect Susan Pierce attended Wolftrap Elementary from kindergarten through sixth grade, making this a wonderful opportunity to give back to a school community that has given so much to so many.
