🔒 Cyber Security Do’s and Don'ts
When it comes to protecting yourself against cyber attacks, the mantra is “Don’t Become A Victim!” Especially if you can help it. The most simple deterrent is asking yourself? Do I know who this call or email is from? Is it legitimate? If not, delete the email or hang up. Here are some others: Do NOT answer or call back an unfamiliar number, particularly from your cell phone. Do NOT engage in conversations with unknown callers. Even simple responses are queues for hackers to authorize fraudulent charges or gain access to personal accounts. Do NOT open unknown attachments or hover over links in emails. Watch for nonsensical characters or sentences, typos, or senders’ addresses not from the company domain. Do report scam numbers to the National Do Not Call Register. Add security layers with the help of IT professionals. And learn as much as you can in training and seminars. Let us know. We can help!

đź”’ Phishing and Vishing
At Synchrous, we have alerted members to “phishing” scams, where the employee of a property receives an email from someone who misrepresents themselves and requests the employee purchase a gift card or wire money prior to reimbursement. Now, there’s an offshoot called “vishing,” (short for voice phishing) which directs recipients to call a number to claim a refund or reimbursement, then pilfers bank account or credit card information. Beware! There are signs you can look for to spot vishing, phishing, and spear phishing messages. Watch for typos, inaccuracies, or awkward phrasing and for sender email addresses that are unrecognizable or don’t appear to be from the company the sender says it represents. The most simple approach? If there is any question in your mind as to the source or its legitimacy, delete the email or hang up.

❄️ Extended Travel
Travel is a core part of the holidays. So when tenants are planning extended trips away during the winter, they should know to prepare for inclimate weather. Ask them to leave the heat at a comfortable level. Yes, it will likely equate to a higher heating bill but it also provides peace of mind in the event of extreme cold weather. If possible, consider draining the system. And ask tenants to undertake other measures to keep their place warm and cozy while away. It may just ensure a more comfortable return.
