As of 06/2024, new smoke alarm standards were adopted (UL 217 8th edition). Important elements of this standard include the following:
Nuisance, or false, alarm reduction is built in to lessen alarms set off by cooking or steam.
Synthetic material detection is now required, such as for polyurethane foam used in furniture.
Multi-criteria detection sensors are required which will detect smoke from both slow smoldering and high flame fires.
When purchasing new smoke alarms these criteria should all be met. Look for UL 217 8th edition on the packaging.
