🐕 MOST REACTIVE DOGS AREN'T DANGEROUS.

That statement surprises a lot of people.

When a dog barks, growls, lunges, or even snaps, it's easy to judge the situation based on how scary it looks or how it makes us feel. But fear, noise, and intensity are not reliable measures of danger.

Dr. Ian Dunbar developed the Dunbar Bite Scale after reviewing data collected by hospitals treating dog bite victims. Instead of focusing on appearances, the scale looks at something objective: *wound pathology*—the actual physical damage caused by the bite.

What did the data show?

Over **99% of reported dog bite incidents fall into Levels 1 and 2**.

These dogs may bark, lunge, snap, or make skin contact with their teeth, but they do not cause serious injury. Their behavior is absolutely not acceptable, but it is very different from the behavior of a dog that inflicts severe physical harm.

That's important because it changes what we should do next.

Many reactive dogs are living in a state of fear and anxiety. They scare people, they stress their owners, and they deserve help. The good news is that dogs in Levels 1 and 2 are often excellent candidates for behavior modification and can frequently be rehabilitated quickly and safely.

The best predictor of future risk isn't barking, growling, breed, size, or appearance.

It's bite history.
