Bayside Pest Control — Bugs run, but they can’t hide!

Hmmmmm

Peak tick season is here — and it's no joke.

Right now, in mid-June, we are in one of the worst windows of the year for tick bites and tick-borne illness transmission. July 4th is historically when the most people report their first symptoms — which means the clock is ticking (pun intended).

We've been seeing a lot of Lyme Disease, but Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, and Alpha-Gal Syndrome (yes, the red meat allergy) all on the rise on Cape Cod.

The photo below was taken in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard. The lighter brown ticks are Lone Star Ticks, which have exploded on the island and are increasingly being found across Cape Cod. The darker brown ticks are Deer Ticks — and with this year's humid weather, they are having a field day.

Scary picture? Yes. But here's the good news: tick-borne illnesses are completely preventable. Visit our website for tips and resources (link in comments)!

Norway rat burrow under a raised garden bed.

This is a pretty typical setup we’re seeing more and more of on Cape Cod. Raised beds hold moisture, there’s usually food nearby, and it gives rats a protected place to dig in and nest.

A lot of the increase in activity comes from things around the property—bird feeders dropping seed, open compost piles, backyard chicken coops, even pet food left outside. Once they find a reliable food source, they stick around and start tunneling.

Rats aren’t just a nuisance either. They can carry diseases like leptospirosis, salmonella, hantavirus, and rat-bite fever.

At Bayside Pest, we approach this with an integrated pest management plan. That means figuring out what’s attracting them, making recommendations to clean that up, and then putting a control program in place with bait stations, burrow treatment, and monitoring to keep it from coming back.

If you’re seeing activity like this around your property, it’s worth getting ahead of it before it turns into a bigger problem.

🕷️ Know Your Ticks – Protect Your Family & Yard 🕷️

Not all ticks are the same—and neither are the diseases they carry. Here are the three most common ticks we see here on Cape Cod:

🟤 Deer / Blacklegged Tick (Ixodes scapularis)
The biggest concern in our area. These tiny ticks are responsible for transmitting Lyme disease, as well as Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis.

🔴 Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum)
Recognized by the white dot on the female’s back. This aggressive tick can transmit Ehrlichiosis and has been linked to Alpha-gal syndrome—a condition that can cause a serious allergy to red meat.

⚫ American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis)
Larger and easier to spot. Known to carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia.

🌿 The bottom line:
Ticks aren’t just a nuisance—they’re a real health risk for you, your family, and your pets.
