Union Fire Protection District

Today is a historical day for the Union Fire Protection District.
Today marks 20 years since hiring our first career full-time firefighters. In 2006, Union Fire was an all volunteer district. At that time, it was decided then that 5 full-time firefighters would be hired to work Monday through Friday, 6:00AM-6:00PM, with weekends off. Three of those original firefighters are still serving here today.

The new full-time firefighters were stationed at our Station 1 on W. Springfield Ave. Volunteers supplemented staffing on weekends and outside of those working hours. They would respond to our Station 2 or 3 to staff apparatus and assist the full-time crew with calls. All three of these stations remain in service today along with several pieces of apparatus that were in operation during that era.

Transitioning to a combination department was a major step forward for the district. As the community grew, the district recognized it had to grow with it. In 2006 Union Fire had 45 volunteer firefighters and ran 820 calls. Fast forward to today, Union Fire has 21 full-time career firefighters and 3 full-time chief positions operating out of two 24/7 manned stations, handling 2022 calls.

We have come a long way in our history and are very proud of progress. Union Fire remains committed to growing with the community to meet the public's needs, enhance safety, and ensure you get the best fire protection possible.

While you’re out tackling summer yard work, don’t forget about those fire hydrants.
If you have a hydrant on your property, please keep at least 3 feet of clearance around it so firefighters can access it quickly when seconds count. Avoid planting bushes, flowers, or other landscaping that could obstruct access to the hydrant.
A few minutes of yard work today can make a big difference during an emergency.
