New Jersey - Explosives and Fireworks Act
New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau would like to remind all boaters of the Explosives and Fireworks Act.
It is illegal to sell, possess, or use any “fireworks” (i.e., aerial or explosive devices) anywhere in the state—including on boats or navigable waterways—without a valid permit. Below are some reasons why fireworks should not be used while boating:
-Boats can catch on fire by sparks, which can easily ignite fuel vapors, deck materials, clothing, or other flammable items on board.
-There are limited escape routes if an accident occurs, and emergency responses are delayed due to being on the water.
-Boats are unstable on the water, which can cause fireworks to tip over, misfire, or launch in unsafe directions.
-The wind over water can blow sparks or projectiles back toward the boat or nearby vessels.
-Firework debris and chemicals from fireworks fall directly into the water, which can harm wildlife and pollute the environment.
-Firework smoke can reduce visibility on the water, creating navigation hazards at night.
Have fun, stay safe on the water — and remember, fireworks don’t belong on a boat.
