Hit my 900th ride today. I started riding in 2021 after losing my dad in 2020. It became a way to steady myself in the middle of grief and keep moving when everything felt heavy. Grateful for the strength these last few years have built — not just physically, but mentally.

I keep thinking about this meal that we had in Cetaldo, Italy.

The older I get, the more I realize my dad wasn’t just present in my life. He was shaping it.

He showed me what it meant to be present. He gave his time freely. Whether it was walking the halls of the Michigan Capitol together in the summer, talking over coffee, or cheering at an MSU game, he made it clear that I mattered.

He was a man shaped by both wounds and grace. He didn’t come from an easy story, but he didn’t let that be the end of it. Instead, he built something beautiful from it. Faith. Family. Legacy.

He taught me not just how to speak well but how to listen deeply. To care about people’s stories. To lead with integrity.

And more than anything, he passed down a phrase that still echoes in my head: “Remember who you are.”

For him, that meant living as a saved sinner. Fully known. Fully loved. Defined not by the pain in his past or the titles he held but by the grace that carried him forward.

That’s the legacy I want to live into.

Being a father isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about loving with consistency. About being there. About passing on truth and tenderness in a world that often lacks both.

This Father’s Day, I’m thinking about the man who gave me that gift and trying to pass it along to my own kids in how I show up, speak truth, and stay rooted in love.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads doing the deep, quiet work of forming a life. You’re building more than you know.
