13 Best Languages to Learn for Business (According to Business People)

It was fun to be in this roundup on UpJourney. Snippet from my contribution:

For the past five years, I have lived in China for roughly half of every year...

I must admit upfront: my Mandarin reading and writing skills are poor, so I can only comment on how spoken Mandarin has helped me in business. My clients in the US enjoy having someone “on the ground” in China, and someone whose Mandarin is decent enough to make connections for them. In the past few years, I have made connections I never would have dreamed of, simply because of my cultural and language exposure. I know enough to know that as my reading and writing (and speaking) skills continue to progress, I will enjoy even more opportunities than now.

As a native English speaker in China, I have a number of opportunities right out of the gate. This has led to me working with state-owned and private organizations, from the Open University of China to AVIC to major retail brands. I’m able to perform not only copy-editing of B2C and B2B content but also what I call “cultural translations.” I help my Chinese clients by shaping their content into something a Western audience will resonate with.

Coca-Cola bottler experiments with turning emissions into effervescence 05/08/2019

Coca-Cola HBC Switzerland (CCHBC) subsidiary Valser is releasing what it calls the world’s first water bottled with carbon dioxide (CO2) pulled directly from the air.

Direct air capture (DAC) is drawing attention from both the government and private sector.

Over time, CCHBC aims for "approximately 25 percent" of future CO2 used in its carbonation to be sourced from Climeworks.

Read about it here:

Personal-Professional Tipping Points

Sunday evening self-encouragement. For those actively pursuing personal-professional resolutions:

I don't make New Year's Resolutions. But, back in April, I did make a public commitment to pivoting all of my clientele to better align with my stated values: https://lnkd.in/gicgWEa.

I am just so thrilled with how, by and large, this is happening.

Tomorrow, I kick off a trial week with a new client in a new role which is a huge leap for me. Work I excel at, with a mission I believe in: reforestation and carbon farming.

Finally blending my hands-on agricultural & conservation background with a Silicon Valley location & professional content skills has led to work with , & , , and other fascinating clients.

Along the way, I received a huge unexpected bonus: renewed faith in my ability to one day re-activate my involvement in my father's , which I helped build. (IoT-based smart farming) is so darn liberating.

This is all thanks to clients, conferences, and new connections. Thank you all for such fantastic learning experiences.

I still have a long way to go. Who doesn't?

Thanks to all for connecting and your support.

Back at you: I'm cheerleading you on. Let's head into 2019 with renewed vigor.

Antonio García Martínez: The State of Startups in 2018 - atrium 10/29/2018

Woooo-y!

Is that how you write that? Not very professional of me, not knowing that...

It has been awhile since I last updated. Some fun clients of late, especially new ghostwriting work!

I have no idea how it took me four years living in Silicon Valley to finally enter the startup/VC realm, but that's happening. I enjoyed this interview piece with the author of Chaos Monkeys, Antonio García Martínez, on "The State of Startups in 2018": https://www.atrium.co/blog/antonio-garcia-martinez/

Looking forward, I'm excited to move into the intersection of VC/Funding & Agriculture. Absolutely eye-popping growth there, and why not?

A prominent niche platform is allowing me to publish initial pieces on:

1) Recycling Agricultural Plastics
2) Role of Heirloom Seeds in a Changing Climate

I look forward to sharing those with you soon!

Happy Sunday, ya'll!

21st Century American Ag: Sourcing Successors and Finding Farmland 07/30/2018

Good morning!

🚜🚜🚜🚜

This week, I had the pleasure of writing an article on farm succession in 21st century America. It's not as grim as ya'll might think!

😱 True, in the last 35 years, the "average age of American farmers has risen more than eight years to over 58 years-old." Also true that farm estate values have "more than doubled, rising from $1,483 per acre in 2000 to $3,060 in 2015.

😅 However, there are a lot of traditional and emerging options for those looking to conserve their farmland, preserve their legacy, and make opportunities for the next generation of family farmers.
