East Texas Behavioral Health Summit 2.0: Renewed Commitment to Mental Health Awareness and Support
On May 6th, the Andrews Center hosted the second annual East Texas Behavioral Health Summit, returning stronger than ever under the inspiring theme “Building Hope. Breaking Barriers.” The event united community leaders, healthcare professionals, and advocates at the Brookshire’s Conference Center to address the urgent mental health challenges facing East Texas, a region grappling with some of the state’s highest rates of su***de and mental illness.
Nearly twice as many local resource organizations participated this year, providing attendees with valuable information, tools, and connections to support mental wellness. The summit featured uplifting live music, interactive booths, and impactful presentations designed to foster hope and healing.
Keynote speaker Doug Smith, MSSW, ACC, shared his personal journey of recovery from mental health struggles and addiction, inspiring the audience with messages of resilience and hope. Former MLB pitcher and World Series champion Josh Tomlin also spoke passionately about his dedication to youth mental health through sports and mentorship programs.
The 2025 summit reinforced the vital role of community collaboration and ongoing conversation in breaking down mental health barriers and building a foundation of hope for those affected.

I’ve always had a soft spot for sweet potatoes. Growing up, they’d make their way to our dinner table every so often, and I had my own little ritual—I’d scoop them out of the skin, spread them across my plate in a thick layer, load them up with butter and a dash of pepper, and that was all I needed.
Sweet potatoes are often considered healthier than white potatoes due to their higher levels of vitamin A, fiber, and antioxidants. However, both types of potatoes can be nutritious and beneficial when included in a balanced diet.
My older brother never cared for them, so he always got a white potato instead. Funny how those small things stick with you—simple family dinners, little traditions, and memories that stay with you forever.
Was there a memory like this that you recall while having dinner with family as a child?
