What a night!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined our holiday party last night, including our extended family from the Athens Karate School! We were too wrapped up in the fun to get any pictures, but it was amazing fun.

From Japanese curry chicken handpies (CoCo's in your hand) to tiramisu, the food was incredible, but the company was even better. The White Elephant gift exchanges were a highlight, featuring some "ruthless" steals by kids and adults alike! It was the perfect way to celebrate our community before the year ends.

Our dojo family showed up in force last night for the 15th Annual Tyler Karate Academy Thanksgiving Potluck—36 strong!

The tables were packed with everything from the classics (ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese) to some uniquely Okinawan touches, including an incredible purple sweet potato pie made with real kokutō.

It was a perfect blend of good food, good laughs, and the kind of community spirit that makes this dojo feel like home. Grateful for every one of you who shared the evening with us.

Exciting Weekend Vibes Continue!

After Saturday's intense karate pre-test, Sensei Nathan "Putakti" and Senpai Sarah "Kestrel" from Tyler Karate Academy dove into a full day of immersive training at the Garimot Arnis Seminar hosted by David Beck of Beck's Martial Arts in Plano, Texas.

They trained under the guidance of master instructors G*t Puno Abon "Garimot" Baet—the 5th generation inheritor of a family art from Paete, Laguna, Philippines, that's over 170 years old—and G*t Ninong Caesar "Hantik" Parazo.

This comprehensive Filipino martial art system, rooted in historical resistance and cultural traditions like the Moro-Moro plays used during revolutionary times, covered everything from buno (traditional Filipino grappling with tiger-inspired techniques) to dynamic weapon work: stick and dagger flows, single and double stick drills, and specialized dagger methods from Moro-Moro and Tres Puntos styles.

Huge props to our team for soaking up this rich heritage and pushing their limits!
