𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿…

A customer came in for an appointment. I looked him in the eye, shook his hand, and said, “Nice to meet you.”

He smiled, shook my hand back, and said, “Nice to meet you too… and thank you for answering the phone.”

I’ll admit, that caught me off guard.

Not because I don’t value customer service. I absolutely do. I learned the importance of customer service working retail in my 20s, and it’s something I’ve carried with me ever since. To me, answering the phone, greeting someone with a smile, looking them in the eye, offering a firm handshake, communicating throughout the repair, and explaining things in plain English instead of technical jargon have always been part of doing business the right way.

What surprised me was hearing those same compliments over and over again from different customers.

Many have told me they called several repair shops before reaching me. Sometimes I wasn’t the first number they called. I was simply the first person they were able to speak with. Others have thanked me for keeping them updated by text throughout the repair or for explaining things in a way that made sense without ever making them feel talked down to.

That really opened my eyes.

The things I considered basic professionalism were the very things customers were remembering and appreciating the most. Apparently, those little things aren’t as common as I thought they were.

Technology is already frustrating and confusing enough. I believe getting it repaired should be the exact opposite.
That’s the standard I’ve tried to hold myself to for the past 12 years, and it’s one I’ll continue to hold myself to every day.
