A new UC Berkeley survey shows how quickly public opinion around psych-del!c reform is shifting, especially when the conversation is focused on research, medical access, and supervised therapeutic care. The 2025 survey included 1,577 U.S. voters, with a ±2.5% margin of error, and was designed to compare current views with the center’s first national survey from 2023. In just two years, strong support rose from 49% to 63% for making these substances easier for scientists to study, from 29% to 41% for prescription access, and from 36% to 46% for legal therapeutic use. That level of growth over a short window is worth paying attention to, but the survey also makes it clear that support is strongest when access comes with structure, oversight, and clear safety standards. The full survey also covered where people hear about psych-del!cs, who they trust for information, whether high school students should receive factual education, perceived usefulness for different conditions, safety concerns, and stigma toward people who use them. Some of the biggest gaps were around awareness and trust, with many voters still unsure how to judge the risks, benefits, and real-world applications. That’s the part advocates, researchers, educators, and journalists should pay attention to: public support is growing, but understanding still has to catch up. The Oklahoma Psychedelic Collective applauds the passage and signing of HB 3834, an important step toward advancing research and innovation surrounding ibogaine and other emerging mental health treatments in Oklahoma.

This legislation signals growing recognition that Oklahoma must continue exploring new, evidence-based approaches to addressing addiction, trauma, depression, and veteran mental health challenges. While ibogaine remains an investigational treatment requiring significant medical oversight and further research, HB 3834 helps create space for responsible scientific inquiry and clinical collaboration.

“We believe Oklahoma can become a thoughtful leader in ethical, research-driven conversations about psychedelic medicine,” said Dr. Chad Johnson. “This bill represents hope for continued research, public education, and compassionate innovation for those who continue to suffer despite existing treatment options.”
