⬆️ NEW IN THE COLLECTION: While working for the Farm Security Administration in Washington, DC, in 1942, photographer Gordon Parks met Ella Watson, who cleaned offices in the building. After hearing her story, Parks began photographing her at work, home, and church. He created an intimate picture of her difficult life, including moments of joy. In this portrait, Parks posed Watson before the American flag in a manner like Grant Wood’s famous painting of the same name. The photo became a powerful symbol of inequality and strength.

“Homeward to the Prairie I Come: Gordon Parks Photographs from the Beach Museum of Art” runs through June 19.
