So true. No matter how good we think we are, we will always fall short. This is why we need Jesus.

It’s impossible to have any boldness in our relationship with God apart from total dependence on what Jesus did for us. The moment we place any faith in our own goodness, our consciences condemn us, because we are all incomplete in our own flesh. Only those of us who are righteous by faith in Jesus have boldness. There was absolutely no boldness to enter into the holy of holies under the Old Covenant. There was much fear. Praise God we have a better covenant!

The Greek word for “workmanship” used here is “POIEMA,” and it means “that which is made” (Vine’s Expository Dictionary). The word signifies that which is manufactured, a product, a design produced by an artisan (Word Wealth, Spirit-Filled Life Bible). It is the word from which we get our English word “poem.” We are God’s poem—His work of art. Good works do not gain us salvation, but they do affirm that salvation has been received into our lives. It is just as foolish for us to boast of our part in salvation as it would be for a masterpiece painting to boast of painting itself.
