Anjelica Lindsey | Ambient Works: Sainte-Chapelle

_____________________________________________

Ambient Works: Sainte-Chapelle is a 16-minute site-specific composition titled SANCTUM created from a live field recording made by Mark Kuykendall and Anjelica Lindsey at Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, France, in October, 2023.

The recording took place within the upper chapel, constructed in the mid-13th century under King Louis IX to house precious Christian relics, including the Crown of Thorns. Renowned for its soaring Rayonnant Gothic architecture and expansive stained glass windows, the chapel created a unique recording environment shaped by vertical volume and reflecting upon over 1,000 luminous stained glass surfaces.

This work integrates the natural ambience of the space including movement, conversation, and the subtle sounds of world travelers passing through the chapel layered with an abstracted pipe organ study composed and performed by Anjelica Lindsey. The organ material is derived from early thematic sketches of REQUIEM, her large-scale work for orchestra and choir completed in 2024. Rather than presenting the themes in developed form, Lindsey reframes them as sonic gestures allowing them to interact fluidly with the architectural and social soundscape of the chapel.

The result is both a document of a specific acoustic moment and an early compositional inquiry into sacred resonance and public ritual.

Anjelica Lindsey - Soliloquy for Solo Cello

__________________________________________________

Soliloquy for Solo Cello is the first single from Chamber in Red, a forthcoming album of chamber works by composer Anjelica Lindsey, written during the winter and spring of 2025. Performed by cellist Mitchell Lyon and recorded in New York City in April 2025, the piece is an introspective work for unaccompanied cello, exploring nuance, phrasing, and tone through a restrained, minimalist approach.

As an introduction to the Chamber in Red collection, Soliloquy highlights Lindsey’s focus on clarity, economy of gesture, and expressive depth within a small instrumental palette.
