What is melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition where dark patches form on your skin, usually on the face. It’s caused by hormone imbalance, which can be triggered by:
• Birth control
• Pregnancy
• Menopause
About 50 – 70% of women develop melasma while pregnant, which is why people call it “the mask of pregnancy.” Fortunately, it doesn’t harm the mother or the unborn baby and goes away about three months after delivery.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE MELASMA:
• Use skincare to reduce hyperpigmentation
• Wear sunscreen daily
• Consider meeting with an endocrinologist about hormone imbalance
