: Born a member of the Osage Nation near Pawhuska in 1887, Clarence Tinker became the first Native American to achieve the rank of Major General in U.S. military history. Tinker earned his wings in 1921, and rose through the ranks until finally being named commander of the Seventh Air Force after the Pearl Harbor attack. He was promoted to Major General in 1942. Sadly, later that same year he also became the first American general to die in the war when his plane went down at the Battle of Midway. Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City was named in his honor. Explore all the fantastic things to see and do in Tinker's hometown of Pawhuska at https://tinyurl.com/PawhuskaGC
