When a department talks about changing its culture, its operations, or its mindset, it’s easy to think it’s just a class away. A one-day seminar. A week of “motivational training.”
But real change doesn’t come from an event.
It comes from commitment. Without the commitment of time, reps, discussion and consistency, the risk increases.
If you want to shift an entire organization, it starts with months of very specific, very focused reps:
Mask-ups with gloves on.
Parallel ladders.
Drags.
Victims out of windows.
Window searches.
Door forces.
Stretching lines to occupied structures.
Twenty-two minutes at a time. Every crew. Every shift. Day after day.
Then you build on top of that. You get companies, stations, battalions, and the entire department talking about what we’re trying to become. Where we want to be. What our philosophies are. What standards we are willing—and not willing—to accept.
You gather policies and procedures from departments that have been dialed-in for years, the ones who don’t settle for “we’re good.” The ones who train, test, refine, and push to be better every year. And you compare your reality to theirs with honesty, not excuses.
Then you scale it up:
Multi-company drills.
Live fire.
Battalion-wide training.
Department-wide evolutions where the fire chief down to the newest recruit is educated on the same expectations and the same why behind them.
Where we fall short—over and over again—is when one or two firefighters go to a class and try to drag the entire department forward by themselves. Or when we run one or two department-wide drills and claim we’re “there.”
Culture doesn’t change because a handful of people care.
Culture changes when the entire organization does the work, consistently, relentlessly, and with a clear direction.
If you want a different fireground, a different level of performance, and different outcomes for your citizens, it starts with the reps. The standards. The uncomfortable conversations. The willingness to build, measure, and improve—day after day.
Change doesn’t come from a class.
It comes from a department that refuses to stay the same.
