Happy Tooth Fairy Day!! While this sounds like a completely ridiculous holiday, I just had to share it because the history of the tooth fairy was quite fascinating.

While doing research, it was really something to follow the extremely up and down history of this folklore. There's no clear beginning to the tall tale but a lot of people think it originated somewhere in 10th Century Norse people of Europe. Over the course of time, and depending on the region, it wasn't as sweet of a story as the one we know today. In 18th century France, it was customary to put the tooth in your shoe rather than under your pillow. I, personally, wish that tradition had stayed because trying to slip a piece of candy under my sleeping child's head is quite challenging. During the Dark Ages, people believed that witches used people's teeth to curse them. All teeth were destroyed during that time to avoid a witch breaking into your home to steal them.

Whatever the true origin is, it's a fun thing to do with my daughter. She's been visited by the tooth fairy twice now and she's looking forward to more. What kind of treats did you receive from the tooth fairy?

Today is National Personal Chef’s Day! So I figured I’d make a shout out to my own personal chef that I hired a few years ago. She’s a sweetheart named Avery and she’s definitely in the beginning stages of her career. In lieu ofa salary, I have to provide room and board (and all medical bills, occasional toys, candy, a ride to and from kindergarten, etc etc) but she’s such a treat to have in the kitchen with me. She requires supervision BUT she can handle a paring knife like a champ and really enjoys helping me chop bell pepper and tomatoes. She refuses to chop onions because they make her cry but other than that, she’s a great personal chef! ☺️☺️👩🏼‍🍳🥘

Today's random holiday post is going to involve an animal that is portrayed as a very cute and cuddly animal but is actually quite large and dangerous!!

Second to the elephant, hippos are the 2nd largest land animal in the world. They are herbivores and are the most active at night, when they're foraging for food! Despite their enormous size, they are also excellent swimmers and they can fold their ears and nostrils while underwater. They can hold their breath for 5 minutes!

The hippo is a fantastic animal and I love that it has it's own holiday. What's your favorite animal?

Happy International Women in Science Day!! I couldn't pick just one (plus the name of the day is WOMEN, plural) so here are some of the awesome, powerful women that have changed the history of science.

1. Katherine Johnson (1918-2020): This mathematician was one of the first African American women to work for NASA. She is best known for making the calculations that allowed the first Americans to enter Earth's orbit and set foot on the moon. I've officially added "Hidden Figures" to my list of movies to watch.

2. Marie Curie (1867-1934): This physicist and chemist conducted the very critical research on radioactivity that eventually led to groundbreaking research and development on brain tumors and using radiation against them. She was the first woman ever to win a Nobel Prize and is currently the only woman to have won two Nobel Prizes. If discovering two new chemical elements (radium and polonium) wasn't enough, she also founded the Curie Institute, a leading medical research center in Paris, France.

3. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836-1917): Despite living in a time when women couldn't practice medicine, this amazing female was the first female doctor in England. She opened up a school of medicine for women and staffed it with mostly women. She was the first female dean of a medical school and was also first female mayor in England.

4. Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1977): This Chinese immigrant to the US was the first female faculty member hired in the physics department of Princeton. She later joined the Manhattan Project at Columbia University and is best known for proving that identical particles don't always behave in the same manner. She called her discovery the Wu Experiment and was later nicknamed "The First Lady of Physics".

Girl Power!! I love celebrating powerhouse females in history, so making this post was a fun one to put together. Comment below with a powerful woman in science that you know and love!!
