🚨 Could GLP-1 medications be making your Botox wear off faster? 👀💉
After seeing this in clinic and hearing the same thing from other injectors, I came across a study that explored whether GLP-1 medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® may reduce how long Botox (and all of the brands) lasts.
Here’s what I learned! 🤔
GLP-1 medications may:
✔️ Increase metabolic activity
✔️ Change neuromuscular recovery
✔️ Potentially alter how the body responds to neurotoxins
What does this mean for patients?
Some patients on GLP-1 medications may notice their Botox doesn’t last quite as long as it used to. However:
➡️ Not everyone is impacted
➡️ It is not always dose-dependent
➡️ Tirzepatide > Liraglutide > Semaglutide
So does this mean we have to choose between weight loss and wrinkles?
Absolutely not!
✔️Trying a different brand to see if one provides better results for your specific situation is one solution.
✔️Another option is simply increasing your dose IF appropriate. This can often help neurotoxin last longer, especially in patients who:
* Exercise heavily
* Metabolize products quickly
* Are on GLP-1 medications
* Go longer between treatments (long after the previous treatment has fully worn off)
The reason is fairly straightforward: a higher dose generally creates a more complete neuromuscular blockade, so it can take longer for nerve signaling to recover.
That being said, there’s a “sweet spot.” More is not always better. Too much toxin can:
* Create heaviness
* Flatten expression
* Cause brow ptosis (drop)
* Increase diffusion into unintended muscles
In clinical practice, longevity often improves more from:
✔️ Proper dosing
✔️ Treating all contributing muscles
✔️ Staying on a regular schedule (every 3-4 months)
If you’ve been experiencing this, you’re not alone! Let’s talk about ways to change things up and extend the life of your tox!
