Tess Ranch Horse Rescue

Eddie is in "retirement" pasture in Tubac for the summer. He is with a group of 7 other geldings and nothing makes Eddie happier than hanging out with friends. Well, that and food. If he checks out well with his vet in the fall he will go to his trainer to get started under saddle. He has done very well healing from his injury. Poor little guy has been close to death twice in his two years of life but has never looked or felt better than he does now.

Please, sweet little Eddie needs healing thoughts and prayers. He came in from pasture very lame on Friday and had emergency surgery on Saturday for septic tendon sheath. If he is able to fight the re-infection risk he can survive but may face a life of unsoundness due to tendon damage. He'll be in the hospital at least a week and then it's wait and see. He's getting excellent care at Jackpot but is not happy about being confined to a stall.

Wonderful to see Eddie living the dream horse life in pasture in Amado with his new girlfriend. He spent a week in a corral bonding with Lily Rae, a 3 year old filly and newbie to pasture life as well. Then they were released to pasture with their new herd. Eddie sticks to Lily Rae like glue.

RIP sweet B, Tess's former stablemate and a beloved mare by everyone who knew her. Tess and B were inseparable companions, there was no peace in the barn if one left without the other. We will miss you B.

Eddie is enjoying life at his new stable. He has many new friends and loves getting together with them to play or go on walks. He is a very social horse and now that he has learned that humans can be trusted (well some of them) his heart is wide open and he wants to befriend every human and horse he meets. He "goes to school" on weekday mornings and is learning many new subjects with plenty of recess time thrown in. He seems to enjoy it all. He is smart, kind, gentle and a bit mischievous. He's a.lot like his namesake.

Eddie is doing great. He has filled out significantly since his arrival and it has really energized him. He loves to play with his toys and kick up his heels. There are changes coming up for him; he will get castrated this coming week and that will open up a new world for him. Being a stallion he has been isolated. After he heals he will move to a stable where he will be with other horses and can let his social self shine. Eddie is very social with humans, he comes to greet everyone who visits his paddock and usually requests a withers and neck rub.
Although horse slaughter in the US is illegal approximately 18,000 horses were shipped from the states to Mexico for slaughter in 2023. Most were likely turned into dog food. The slaughter methods are inhumane as is the shipping process. Horses are not fed or watered on their way to Mexico. Heartbreaking and stomach turning to think of those 18,000 horses and that beautiful, sweet Eddie nearly met this fate.

Eddie is doing so well. We can not only touch him extensively, he is trying to manipulate Jean into being his full-time massage therapist. Below are two photos, the first at the Texas auction where you can see the fear in his eyes and the second, taken on Saturday, when he took his first walk around the neighborhood. He has also enjoyed some time in the arena to kick up his heels and run for joy.
The plan is to train Eddie to carry a rider and then try to find a loving home worthy of him Given Eddie's youth and Jean's advanced age they are not a good, long term match. Adopting Eddie out would also free up space and funds to rescue another horse in need. Ron, horse whisperer and trainer extraordinaire (who donates his time and talents to Tess Ranch) says Eddie is a very cooperative horse and one of the easiest to train that he has worked with.

Shayed, aka, Eddie, was rescued from the Bowie Livestock Auction in Bowie, Texas and after a long journey arrived at his new home in Tucson one week ago. Eddie had been at the auction yard for weeks and with no takers was slated to get on the next slaughter truck to Mexico. He is a 13 month old Saddlebred c**t.
We could not touch him for five days, he was so terrified from what he had been through. Now we are able to pet him, groom him, halter him and gently work with him. He is still a bit skittish but getting braver every day, seems very content in his new home and LOVES his food. He is showing himself to be a gentle and social boy. After he is gelded he will go to live in Tess's former stall and paddock with the Arabian mare B. Eddie is adorable.

The creation of Tess Ranch Horse Rescue was inspired by the beautiful, sassy mare Tess. Tess was a rescue from a neighbor that could not provide proper care for her. The devastating loss of Tess in August 2023 inspired Jean to to form a non-profit to rescue other horses in need.
