Our industry relies on CAD to communicate how something should be built and then we use CNC to make sure that it's accurate to the design. It's a quick and cost-effective method. The method of line drawings and hand sculpting is neither quick nor cost-effective, but the results can be spectacular. Here is a small mock-up of a larger project.

CNC machining has become the staple of pattern building for CDI and many other precast companies. The speed, accuracy and reduced costs are hard to argue with. Occasionally someone requests an 18" tall pineapple finial that must match previous versions. For that to be successful for us we fall back to the hand sculpting that built this industry.

Trying to match custom colors and aggregates in precast or cast stone can be very tedious and expensive. Every now and then it pays off with a great experience like getting to make a trip to the marble quarry.
