I had a client yesterday, He had amazing hair - thick, wavy, glossy, enviable. My first thought was I'm going to be doing a fade, as that's what he looked like he'd been growing out for the past three or four weeks. I introduced myself, led him to my chair, and asked, 'The Question': What are we doing? He said, 'I want to grow it out.' The consultation then went on for 20 minutes, covering all options. We landed on getting rid of some of the weight line and debulking heavy areas while letting the previously faded area grow out. I listened, empathized, concluded, and proceeded with our plan. This was a haircut totally based on feel - feeling for where wave collisions were happening creating heavy clumps going in and removing each and every one. I asked my client to run his hand through and feel the difference; he was impressed and relieved to have found someone who really cares about the craft. I then suggested he should still have a bit of undercut going on, as his hair would end up being pyramidal-shaped, and I knew he would miss the shortness above his ears as I noticed him looking at his sides, and I knew this is what he was thinking, so we went back through, and I clipper-cut him around his ears and nape, blending it up and into what we'd already done Finally landing on a collaberative look we both loved! Something another hairstylist may have spent 15 minutes on took me a solid hour. This client was ecstatic when he left; he rebooked and told me I'm his go to stylist. This is what I want to do - get back to caring about the hair, caring about making someone's lifestyle easier. All in all, it was a great day!
