A recent project reminded me of a small field tip that I stumbled my way through a few years ago.

Mark your detectors.

🏷️Good quality stickers with clear identification can go a long way.

Some bat detectors can look surprisingly similar to trail cameras to someone unfamiliar with acoustic work. If someone comes across equipment in the field, making it obvious that it belongs there, what it is, and who it belongs to can help reduce confusion.

But materials matter.

☀️ Sunlight is rough on equipment. Non-UV-rated inks fade. Regular tape breaks down, especially in the rain 🌧️. Weather does what weather does.

A label doesn’t help much if it turns into an unreadable rectangle halfway through deployment.

🛡️ I’ve moved toward using permanent vinyl labels with UV protection (matte, not glossy) so that information stays legible after months outside. It’s a small detail, but field equipment lives outside. Build for that reality.

Fieldcraft isn’t always microphone placement or detector settings.

Sometimes it’s making sure your detector still looks intentional after sitting in the weather for three months.
