New study finds eating meat not linked to higher death risk, may even reduce cancer mortality, sparking health debate 🍽️

The Q-SYMBIO randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the effect of coenzyme Q10 in 420 patients with moderate to severe chronic heart failure (NYHA class III–IV) who were already receiving standard medical therapy. Participants were given 300 mg of CoQ10 per day (100 mg three times daily) or a placebo and followed for two years. The study found that cardiovascular mortality was significantly lower in the CoQ10 group, with deaths occurring in about 9% of treated patients compared with ~16% in the placebo group, corresponding to roughly a 50% relative reduction in cardiovascular death.

Beyond mortality, the CoQ10 group also experienced fewer major adverse cardiovascular events and meaningful improvements in heart failure symptoms and functional class, indicating better day-to-day clinical status. Importantly, CoQ10 was used as an add-on, not a substitute for standard heart-failure medications, suggesting it supported cardiac energy metabolism alongside conventional therapy. While the mortality reduction was notable for a supplement-based intervention, the trial size was modest, which is why the findings are considered promising but not yet definitive without larger confirmatory studies.
