π Giving Thoughtfully This Holiday Season π
When a loved one with a disability receives needs-based benefits like SSI or Medicaid, some gifts β especially cash β can unintentionally put those benefits at risk.
Why it matters:
Cash, large checks, or high-value assets may count as income or resources and affect eligibility. Rules vary by state, so itβs important to give carefully.
Safer ways to give:
βοΈ Contribute to a Third-Party Special Needs Trust
βοΈ Use an ABLE account (one per person; annual contribution limits apply)
βοΈ Pay directly for experiences or services like tickets, lessons, or memberships
Great gift ideas that are usually safe:
π¨ Books, games, art supplies
π± Electronics or adaptive technology
π§Έ Sensory-friendly or comfort items
βΏ Accessibility-focused tools that support independence
