As a part of my art class for Jackson State, we were required to pick an artist from the list he provided and make a drawing. I asked the professor if I could paint my project instead of drawing it, and he said absolutely!

“Christ with a Crown of Thorns” by Peter Paul Rubens
Peter Paul Rubens is one of the most influential Baroque artists. His artwork is glorified by many people. He conveys clear messages to his audience through his art by using many different elements to create unity. He embeds classical themes with dramatic visuals and vibrant colors to bridge a transition between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. Rubens has a variety of paintings; however, his piece “Christ with the Crown of Thorns” gives great insight into his ability to create an art that relays a message to his viewers. The piece shows his ability to incorporate religion with the Baroque sensibilities, which illustrates his theological concerns, but also his technical virtuosity.
Peter Paul Rubens was born June 28, 1577, in Germany. At the age of fourteen, Ruben’s apprenticed Tobias Verhaeght. After only one year, he worked in Adam van Noort’s studio for four years. In 1609, Ruben’s became a court painter to the duke. The duke financially supported Rubens in his art, which allowed him to travel to Rome and Spain. He was privileged to study classical art, create his own art, and make duplicates of the Italian master paintings. Rubens became a profound influential artist. He influenced other artists by his style. For example, one artist he influenced was Eugene Delacroix. “The 19th-century French Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix wrote that Rubens ‘carries one beyond the limit scarcely attained by the most eminent painters; he dominates one, he overpowers one, with all his liberty and boldness’” (Scribner and Charles).
“Christ with the Crown of Thorns”, painted around 1610, is one of Peter Paul Rubens' most elaborate paintings. The painting brings to light the emotions in the biblical scene of Jesus Christ. The painting shows Christ draped in a red robe, with a crown of thorns on his head. This is a scene from the bible that relates to the verse John 19:5. I was particularly drawn to this piece by its boldness. The painting brings to light scratches on Jesus Christ’s shoulder from his beatings and yet he seems to have no pain even with a crown of thorn on his head. This painting is not just visually beautiful, but it brings in emotion and it has such a deep meaning that it goes beyond the eyes.
Throughout this project, I made particular choices consciously regarding the way I would tackle this assignment. I began by going through the artist looking for a piece of artwork that truly spoke to me. I became inspired by Peter Paul Rubens work as I found he created many biblical paintings. I then began research on Rubens and specific aspects of his life that led to him becoming a famous artist. I wanted to highlight certain points in his life that correlated to this piece. I also wanted to present a balance of who he was and what this painting means to me. This project has truly helped me dig deeper into my own artwork. It taught me the importance of emotion in art. Understanding an artist's background can significantly enhance your understanding of the art presented before you. I also learned how to approach with an open mind, to allow my mind to see things in a different perspective.
In conclusion, my research on Peter Paul Ruben and “Christ with the Crown of Thorns” has been a transformative experience. This research has deepened my understanding of how the life behind the artist is what allows them to have emotional weight in their artwork. This project has not only improved my research ability, but also fostered a much greater appreciation for the complexities that go into every piece of art. I genuinely look forward to applying this knowledgein my own paintings in the future. This experience has helped me gain so much insight into the world of art and it has opened my eyes.
