The civil rights movement, led by voices like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, sparked ongoing struggles for peace, justice, and equity that continue to shape our communities today. Michigan’s universal breakfast and lunch program is a direct result of that work, rooted in the belief that everyone has the right to healthy food.

Real change happens when diverse people and organizations come together around shared goals, just as our Food Rescue program and our partners at the Food Coalition do. As Dr King reminded us, we must have “the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity and freedom for their spirits.”
