To an adult, it may look like children making mud pies. To a child, they’re running a business, practicing literacy and math, solving problems, building friendships, and making sense of the world. Play is never “just play.” It’s childhood at its very best. 🦦🤎

What If We Built Schools Around Human Development Instead of Standardization?
What if we recognized that children grow at different rates, learn in different ways, and arrive with different gifts, interests, challenges, and perspectives?
What if observation came before instruction?
Not observation focused on deficits.
Not observation searching for what is wrong.
But strength-based observation that helps us discover who each child is, what they love, what motivates them, and how they learn best.
What if learning environments were intentionally designed with multiple pathways for success?
Spaces for movement.
Spaces for creativity.
Spaces for collaboration.
Spaces for quiet reflection.
Spaces for building, investigating, imagining, and exploring.
What if children were trusted to follow their curiosity while caring adults helped connect that curiosity to meaningful learning?
What if reading, writing, and math were not isolated subjects to complete, but tools children used to pursue their interests, answer their questions, and better understand the world around them?
What if we stopped viewing differences as problems to solve and started seeing them as information to guide us?
Because every child is telling us something.
Through their play.
Through their interests.
Through their struggles.
Through their questions.
Through the ways they engage with the world.
The challenge is whether we are paying attention.
Perhaps education was never meant to be about moving groups of children through the same material at the same pace.
Perhaps it was meant to help each child discover their strengths, develop confidence in their abilities, and find meaningful ways to contribute to the world around them.
Because children are not standardized.
Human development is not standardized.
And maybe our schools shouldn’t be either.
Imagine what might be possible if we built learning environments that reflected that truth.
