Did you know the first woman in America to earn a doctor of dental surgery degree practiced in Kansas? Lucy Hobbs Taylor received her degree in 1866 and moved her practice to Lawrence a year later. She and her husband established the most successful dental practice in Kansas. Then and Now: Fort Larned National Historic Site was established in 1859 to protect travelers along the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was originally called Camp on Pawnee Fork then renamed Fort Larned in 1860 after Colonel Benjamin F. Larned, the United States Army paymaster general at the time the fort was established. The fort operated until 1878 and was designated as a National Historic Site in 1964. The first photo is from www.kansasmemory.gov/item/216762 and the second photo is what the fort looks like now.
