Thinking About Downsizing? Here’s How to Make the Process Easier, Safer & Less Overwhelming.
Downsizing isn’t just about moving to a smaller home — it’s about creating a lifestyle that feels safer, simpler, and more supportive for the years ahead. As a Realtor ®️, RN, and Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES®️), I see many families struggle with where to start.
Here are some resources and steps I recommend when deciding what to keep, what to let go of, and what kind of home to downsize into:
1. Start With a Home Safety + Functionality Review
Before sorting belongings, look at what you actually need for safe daily living. Consider:
• Mobility and fall risks
• Accessibility of bathrooms and kitchens
• Ease of home maintenance
You could bring in an Occupational Therapist, Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), or a Senior Move Manager for professional insight.
2. Use a Sorting System That Reduces Decision Fatigue
A simple structure helps a lot:
• Keep (use daily or weekly)
• Sentimental (limit to a small, meaningful collection)
• Donate
• Sell (estate sale professionals can handle this for you)
• Discard
Many aging adults and their families find value in working with professional organizers, estate sale companies, or downsizing services who make this process easier and less emotional.
3. Consider the Right Type of Housing for Your Next Chapter
Your “right size” home should fit your lifestyle today and support your needs tomorrow. Options include:
• Retirement communities
• Maintenance-provided villas or patio homes
• Condos with amenities
• Independent living communities
• Moving in with family / multigenerational living
Each option comes with different levels of support, social connection, and cost. A Senior Real Estate Specialist can help you compare them.
4. Take Your Time — But Have a Plan
Downsizing is a process, not an event. Set a timeline, work through one area at a time, and bring in professionals who can make it smoother.
If you or a loved one is considering downsizing and wants guidance, resources, or a step-by-step plan, I’m here to help.

Simple Changes to Make Aging in Place Easier
Whether you’re planning ahead for your own future or helping a loved one stay safely at home, even small changes can have a big impact.
Here are a few simple modifications that can support comfort and safety as we age:
1. Add grab bars in the bathroom
2. Swap out round door k***s for lever-style handles
3. Install motion-sensor lighting in hallways and entryways
4. Rearrange furniture to create wider, clearer walkways
5. Trade bathtubs for walk-in showers (or add a shower seat)
6. Store daily-use items on lower shelves to avoid step stools
These small updates don’t require a full remodel, but they can make daily life easier and safer for years to come.
Curious about other simple ways to support aging in place?
I have helpful resources I’d be happy to share — and if you’re starting to think about your next chapter, or have a loved one who is, I can also help you find a home that better fits your lifestyle and future needs.

First-Time Homebuyers: Here’s a Rule You’ll Want to Know!
Before you fall in love with that dream home, let’s talk budget — and the 28/36 Rule!
28% of your gross monthly income should go toward housing costs — that includes your mortgage, taxes, insurance, and HOA fees if applicable.
36% is the total limit for all monthly debt payments — housing plus things like car loans, credit cards, or student loans.
Why is this important? It helps you avoid stretching too thin financially and puts you in a strong position when applying for a loan.
Buying your first home is exciting, but staying within a smart budget keeps the experience positive (and less stressful).
Have questions about where to start, how much you can afford, or how to get pre-approved? I’d love to walk you through it.
