The Reality of Engine Building in 2026

One thing people don’t always see behind the scenes in an engine shop is how often brand-new parts show up with issues.

Here’s a good example from today.

These are two pistons from the same brand-new shelf set, and same batch number. Same wrist pin… two different results and neither are right.

• One piston – the wire locks install but clamp the pin so tight it can’t rotate
• The other piston – the wire locks won’t even fit because the groove is machined in the wrong location

This kind of thing has been happening more and more often lately, and it seems like every other project we work on has something that needs corrected or replaced.

Unfortunately, tracking down and fixing problems like this takes valuable time, but it’s part of doing the job right. If we don’t catch it here, it becomes someone else’s engine failure later.
