Black Glove Hand Lettering

Work has been kicking my 🐴ss this week. The font study has come to a grinding halt due to board meetings and an influx of quotes and projects. Hoping to get back into the groove here soon! For the time being, here’s a quick practice I did with a Micron Brush Pen. Unlike typical calligraphy nibs, brush pens require a delicate change in pressure rather than nib position.

Taking a quick break from the font study today to break down the components of typography (something I probably should have lead with). I assume everyone knows what an uppercase and lowercase letter is, but you might not know that the little dangly bit from the letter “g” is called a link, the semi circles in letters like “p” “q” “d” and “b” are called bowls, and a serif is the kind of “notches” made at the end of a letter. So to say a font is sans-serif is to say that it does not have the fancy notches, but rather the line just ends. Any way, the more you know 🌈

I always include a little hand written note with forms that need to be signed, but it wasn’t until I had five different policies that I realized I may have mastered the muscle memory of this particular phrase. 🙃

Font #3 Aharoni: A thick and bold sans-serif font. Originally created as a Hebrew version of Ebar-Grotesk (a more geometric sans-serif font) it has been utilized in Windows 2000, XP, XP SP2, Server 2003, Server 2008, 7, 8, 10, and 11. I had to use a font size of 24 to get the letters to be more fitting within my 0.5x1.0cm base range, which made the font a bit cramped. Definitely needs a bigger canvas to work with ✍️

Font #2 Agency FB: A very neat and tidy font. Sharp lines with subtle curves at nearly every 90° angle. The interesting tidbit with Agency FB is that it’s one of the more uniform fonts in its size and shape. In the scale I use (x = 0.5cm, y = 1cm) every lowercase letter, with the exception of L and I, is exactly 0.25cm long and 0.5cm high (not including ascenders and tails). Uppercase letters are always 0.3cm long, and 0.75cm high. Writing in this font really does scratch that “oddly satisfying” itch. 🤤
