🐴 Rider Safety Tip: Closed-Toed Shoes Matter 🐴

This week we’d like to talk about rider safety, and we’re starting from the ground up—your feet!

At Lucky H Ranch, riders may wear tennis shoes for lessons. However, riders wearing tennis shoes will not be allowed to use stirrups. We’ll talk more about why proper riding boots are important in our next post.

Today, let’s talk about why closed-toed shoes are required around horses.

Horses are large animals that can weigh over 1,000 pounds. They can’t always see where your feet are, especially when you’re standing close to them. If a horse accidentally steps on your foot, the results can be painful and can cause serious injury.

That’s why flip-flops, sandals, slides, and any other open-toed footwear are not allowed around the horses at Lucky H Ranch.

Closed-toed shoes help:
✅ Protect your toes from being stepped on
✅ Shield your feet from mud, rocks, and other hazards
✅ Provide better stability when walking around horses
✅ Reduce the risk of injury while handling and grooming horses

A simple pair of closed-toed shoes can make a big difference when it comes to staying safe around horses.

So let’s start with, in my opinion, the most important piece of safety equipment a rider can have: helmets.

Horseback riding is an incredible sport that builds confidence, responsibility, and a lifelong love for horses — but it is still a sport with real risks. Wearing a properly fitted helmet is one simple step we can take to help protect riders while they enjoy everything horses have to offer.

At Lucky H Ranch, we believe every rider should have access to a properly fitted, ASTM-approved helmet and understand why wearing one matters. Whether you’re a first-time rider or a seasoned competitor, protecting your head is an important part of being a responsible horseman.
