This week's class of PLASTIC RECYCLING 106, we have:

#6 Plastics

Or, for those of you who like to be all technical and whatnot:

Polystyrene.

Also known as PS.

And yes, this is where things get a little tricky, because #6 plastic likes to show up in all sorts of places, just like your in-laws...

You may see #6 plastic in things like:

Plastic disposable cups
Clear takeout containers
Some bakery containers
Some egg cartons
Some disposable plates
Foam cups
Foam food containers
Foam packing blocks
And everyone’s favorite: Styrofoam

Now here is the important part:

#6 plastic is NOT accepted in your blue-lidded recycling cart.

Nope.
No.
Never.
Nada.

That includes both the hard plastic kind and the foam kind.

Especially the foam kind.

Styrofoam may have a recycling triangle on it. It may even have a #6 inside that triangle.

But that does not mean it belongs in your recycling cart.

The number tells you what kind of plastic it is.

It does not automatically mean it is recyclable in your local program.

And around here, #6 plastic is a no-go.

So please put #6 plastic and Styrofoam in the trash.

Do not put it in the recycling cart.

Do not wedge it inside a cardboard box and hope it gets adopted by the recycling fairy.

Trash cart. That’s where it goes.

As always, when in doubt, throw it out.

Now, if you really, really want to recycle your , you are more than welcome to load up your transportation device of choice with your passel of polystyrene and haul it to one of the couple of places in the KC area that accept it.

But for your blue-lidded Shawnee County recycling cart?

That's a Big 'Ol No.

Make good choices and recycle right!
