Rent collections are down in New York — and no one's sure why 06/23/2026

In this piece by Politico which delves into the complex issue of rent arrears in the City, WHEDco President Davon Russell highlights the impact this has on the sector, especially nonprofit housing providers. "If we're ultimately caring about keeping people housed, we should just as doggedly talk about the people who are sabotaging that."

The article underscores a troubling reality: As rent collections remain below pre-pandemic levels, nonprofit providers like WHEDco are increasingly reliant on emergency assistance from HRA to keep buildings afloat. The financial strain threatens the very organizations working hardest to preserve housing stability for low-income New Yorkers.

WHEDco was proud to take the stage at the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA) National Human Services Summit this week to share the impact of our Community Child Care Connections (C4) Project, alongside partners from NYC Administration for Children's Services- ACS and BronxWorks!

The C4 Project is a groundbreaking initiative to expand child care voucher access in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan, which had shockingly low access to child care assistance despite having some of the city's highest poverty and unemployment rates. Some critical outcomes from the first round of C4 include:

✅5,800+ children had applications processed
✅2,470 children enrolled in care with a voucher
✅$42M in estimated annual voucher subsidies generated

These results prove that when trusted community organizations meet families where they are, outcomes improve dramatically! In fact, WHEDco was proud to achieve the highest eligibility rate among the three partner CBOs (76.4%) to enroll 1,104 children in care, with 84% of WHEDco-supported enrollments coming from priority community districts.

Kudos to our very own Cynthia Rodriguez, who has been leading WHEDco's work on the Community Child Care Connections (C4) Project!

Round 2 is underway, and we're building on everything we've learned. Thank you to Robin Hood and for making this work possible.
