Let’s talk about it!!!

Independence is often seen as a cornerstone of parenting, including within the special needs community. It represents growth, dignity, and the hope that our children can one day navigate the world on their own terms. However, independence is not a one-size-fits-all goal. For parents of children who cannot yet speak for themselves, walk independently, or fully understand safety awareness, the priority shifts. In these cases, care, protection, and quality of life take precedence over traditional measures of independence. Parenting then becomes less about preparing a child to separate from support, and more about building a life where they are understood, and fully supported in ways that honor their unique abilities.
