President Joe Biden signed the National Independence Day Act, making Juneteenth an official US federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when Union Army Major General Gordon Granger read General Order Number 3, informing “the people of Texas…that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

With Biden’s signature, Juneteenth is the first holiday to be approved since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983 and is another step in the right direction.
