At Maramar Community School, students, educators, and volunteers worked together to care for the school’s growing green spaces — watering, planting, maintaining, and learning through the land itself.

What makes this project special is that the work is not separate from the school day. It becomes part of the children’s daily environment, guided by local knowledge, shared care, and the belief that learning can happen with hands in the soil.

We’re grateful to our project partner, Escola Comunitária Maramar, for helping make this work possible. 💚

Before, these spaces around the school had very little vegetation. Now, they are growing into living classrooms. 🌱

Through the Maramar Environmental Education Project, students helped care for the trees through regular watering, observation, and hands-on learning. With support for weeding, ant control, and ongoing maintenance, the gardens are now blooming — and the school has already harvested bananas, pineapples, and almost 100kg of cassava from earlier plantings.

More than a planting activity, this project helped children experience ecological care through daily practice and local community knowledge.

What began as small plantings is now a place for children to learn, grow, and connect with nature. 🌱

A heartfelt thank you to our project partner, Escola Comunitária Maramar, for helping bring this work to life. 💚

Shai is the VP of the Next Generation Board and Director of Youth Recruitment. 🌳

She runs a lot of the social media, and makes many of the videos. Shai has been working for Seas of Trees since 2020, and she has big plans for getting students at UCSB and elementary students in the Santa Barbara area involved in planting trees. Shai is studying Sociology, and going to add either an Environmental Studies or Environmental Law and Policy double major. She did a 6 month internship with Sheep Mountain Alliance in high school, learning all about local Colorado land laws, the Colorado Forest Plan, and the plans to fight back against resource extraction for Uranium around Telluride, Colorado. Shai is excited to start a few large projects in SB that hopefully carry a legacy forever! Her most notable project with Seas of Trees was a planting day with her chapter of National Honor Society planting 30 trees around the high school, as well as serving as the President of the Environmental Club for 1 year, initiating projects like composting, clothing recycling, and more.

Stay tuned if you want to help out with a planting day in Santa Barbara! ˖🫧🐚°
