In 1940, Ray Adam’s purchased the Whalehead Club on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for $25,000. He had dreams of selling off parcels of prime duck hunting land to potential investors like President Dwight Eisenhower and boxing champion Jack Dempsey. The property even included a man-made landing strip where those traveling by airplane could land and taxi up to the front door of the house.

The airport sits at an elevation of 9,334ft and is only 1,729ft long.
