PSA: A couple of things to know if your basement is flooding (or anywhere else for that matter).
1) Once you know or suspect water has risen above the level of electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, the water heater, furnace or is near your electrical panel stay out. Water can become charged and represent a serious shock hazard. More info here: https://esasafe.com/safety/storm-safety/flood-safety/
2). Natural gas appliances can also become charged. Don't touch them.
3) Get all NG appliances inspected for damage.
4). If you fear significant flooding turn off the gas and electric (assuming you can do so safely).
One more thing, if your sump pump isn't working check to make sure the float isn't stuck. Sometimes the float gets stuck and then the pump doesn't turn on. You can trigger the pump manually by lifting the float and then reposition the pump so that the float doesn't get stuck again. If the float gets stuck repeatedly the only option is to keep triggering it manually until you can buy a new pump.
