The garden is in full bloom, even before students are back on campus—and that says so much about the work our teens have put in over the years.

They didn’t just “do a project.” They helped build something living, lasting, and beautiful.

This is one of the things we love about THRIVE: students have space to take ownership, work with purpose, and see the real impact of their effort.

A full three-day program allows us to build that kind of consistency, community, and follow-through.

We are so proud of what they grew.

Warning, long but super informative post

Recently someone commented that our school schedule looks a lot like a public school and that is a valid question! So I wanted to take a second and share some of my favorite differences.

Academics:
At THRIVE we work hard to make sure our students receive an education that prepares them for life after high school, whatever that looks like. So it is important that our academic courses meet college readiness standards. However, we structure our courses more like the way colleges are.

On school days at home, students watch lectures, read materials, and prepare for in class work and discussions. Instead of having our students come to school to sit in a chair and listen to lectures for 6 hours, we want them actually engaging with their peers and teacher in group discussions, helping each other understand concepts, doing hands on projects and labs, and getting the absolute most out of their in class time.

Time:
The average public high school student spends approximately 1,200 hours at school per year. That is about 35 hours a week. That is basically a full time job. Not to mention the additional 3.5 hours of homework per day according to Education Week.
THRIVE students spend about 504 hours a year in school being as productive academically and socially as possible, which gives them over 700 hours back in their year.

Yes they still have work to do at home. We are homeschoolers after all. But like all homeschoolers, how much free time they have really depends on how focused and intentional they are. We do not do fluff, filler, or time wasting busywork. Just meaningful learning.

Size and attention:
THRIVE is a microschool. Our high school classes are capped at 15 students with 2 teachers per classroom. It allows us to give real one on one attention, but it also creates a warm close knit classroom environment where students actually feel known and supported.

Last week I had an impromptu meeting with our current students about next year. I asked them what they wanted from their high school experience and what they felt was missing. Because they feel so comfortable with us, we ended up having an amazing conversation where they were actively helping shape the future of the school.

We talked about things like formal dinner nights, senior pranks, and other real high school experiences they want to bring into our small school. I love that they feel safe enough to contribute and even more than that that they are excited about building something together.

Flexibility:
There are so many ways that our school allows families, students, and teachers the flexibility to make school work better for them and not force everyone into a one size fits all day.

If the class is sleepy and unfocused we get up, move, and switch into a team activity. If your child needs a mental health day that is totally okay. We get it. We need them too. Just make sure we are staying on track academically.

If the sun is shining and everyone is suddenly more interested in looking out the window than solving equations we go outside. Hammocks and nets it is. Math can absolutely happen outdoors.

Breaks are also built into the day for movement, reset, and rest. Once a week students step away from traditional academics to learn real world skills like how to change a tire or how to break down and understand a news article.

More than anything THRIVE is intentional. About time. About attention. About experience.

Who we are for:
We are not perfect and we are not for everyone. But here is who we are for.

✨The parent who wants their child to have their time back but does not feel ready to educate them alone
✨The student who thrives in a small group of close friends and loves doing life together
✨The families looking for that space between full time public school and unschooling. Who want structure without rigidity. Support without overwhelm. And real community

If any of this resonates with you or your student send us a message. We would love to have you.
