How Kodak Invented Digital Photography in 1975 and Still Went Bankrupt by 2012

In 1975, inside a quiet Kodak lab, a 24-year-old engineer named Steve Sasson built a strange, toaster-sized contraption. It looked nothing like a camera. It recorded grainy black-and-white images onto a cassette tape. Its resolution? Just 0.01 megapixels.

But it was revolutionary.

What Sasson had built wasn’t just a camera—it was the world’s first digital camera. A device that could capture moments without film, without processing, without chemicals. The future had just clicked into existence.

But Kodak didn’t celebrate. They shelved it.

Why? Because Kodak didn’t fear innovation—they feared disruption. They were making billions from selling film. Sasson’s invention threatened that. The thought of embracing a future that would destroy their present profits was too much to bear. So instead of leading the digital revolution, Kodak decided to wait.

And while they waited, others moved forward. By the 1990s, companies like Sony and Canon were racing into the digital age. Kodak tried to catch up, but by the time they embraced digital fully, it was too late. In 2012, they filed for bankruptcy, the once-mighty giant crushed under the weight of their own fear.

It wasn’t the technology that failed—it was the mindset.

Kodak saw the future. They built it. But they didn’t have the courage to believe in it.

And that’s the real warning. Innovation doesn’t always fail because of bad ideas—it fails when good ideas are ignored in favor of comfort. When the present feels safer than the future.

P.S. Steve Sasson still works in imaging technology today. His invention changed the world—but not for the company that first held it.

Fun Fact: The original digital camera stored its images on a cassette tape, and it took 23 seconds to capture a single image.
