Even after all these years behind the chair, sometimes color has other plans. Redken

Honestly, I thought we were on the right track. We started by lifting with Blonde IQ 9+, and it lifted beautifully and predictably. Next, I toned out the initial blue with Shades EQ 08CR + Crystal Clear, and everything was looking exactly as expected.

Then I applied a red direct dye in the back and still felt confident about where we were headed. After that, I formulated Color Fusion 6RR + 4RR with 20 volume, and that part came out perfectly.

But then something unexpected happened.

When I reapplied the red direct dye in the back, it came out as a hot pink/magenta tone. From a color theory standpoint, it didn’t make sense. The underlying canvas, the formulas, and the process all suggested we should have landed somewhere completely different. I used a fire engine 🚒 red 😭

I went back in with Blonde IQ 9+ and 10 volume to gently bump out the surprise shadow root that decided to make an appearance and remove some of the lingering color. Once we had a cleaner canvas, I applied Shades ALK 6R + 10 vol.

And finally… we reached our destination.

My biggest takeaway? Even when the process is technically sound, hair doesn’t always follow the textbook. Experience doesn’t mean I don’t make mistakes or hair doesn’t do weird things. It’s about knowing when something isn’t working, trusting what you’re seeing, and having the confidence to change course.

Color correction isn’t about perfection. It’s about problem-solving. SalonCentric

Here are the things I learned at Redken symposium…

06/16/2026

Walking onto the Symposium 2026 Main Stage for the very first time is a moment I will never forget.

This week was filled with so many highlights. The incredible education, the conversations in the Education Gallery, the energy of the Grand Opening led by Matt Swinney, and an unforgettable Electri-City Bash. Every moment reminded me why this industry is so special.

But my favorite part wasn’t standing on stage.

It was meeting so many of you in real life.

For years, we’ve connected through videos, comments, DMs, and shared passion for our craft. This week, those online connections became real conversations, hugs, photos, and memories. What started on a screen became something so much bigger in person.

To everyone who watches, shares, comments, attends classes, and supports what I create: thank you. None of this happens without you. Every opportunity I’ve been given is because you’ve chosen to be part of this journey.

So as Symposium comes to a close, I’m left with one question…

What’s next? ✨ Thank you SalonCentric for letting me takeover!
