Honoring Literacy, Legacy, and Community
From the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Black Community Relations Committee, Inc.

Reading has always been a powerful act of liberation in the Black community. From the generations who were denied the right to read, to the leaders who used knowledge to transform our nation, literacy has remained a pathway to freedom, identity, and empowerment.

This year, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, we are deeply honored to continue his legacy in a meaningful way. Our committee was invited by Dr. Carter G. Woodson preK-8 School to serve as guest readers for their African American Read‑In, an event dedicated to uplifting Black authors, stories, and voices.

As the BCRC, we are committed to showing up for our youth, strengthening community relationships, and ensuring that every child sees themselves reflected in the pages they read. When our children read, they imagine new possibilities. When our community reads, we rise together.

This Black History Month, we honor the past, invest in the present, and inspire the future one story at a time.

Sheriff’s Black Community Relations Committee Inc. Community Impact Spotlight

Today, members of the Sheriff’s Black Community Relations Committee Inc. had the honor of supporting and attending a powerful Leadership Retreat designed specifically for young men ages 16 to 24.

This immersive experience centered on goal setting, personal responsibility, and developing the leader within. Through transformative workshops, mentorship, and hands‑on activities, participants were challenged to think bigger, walk with purpose, and step boldly into their future.

The retreat concluded with a meaningful moment that symbolized each young man’s growth and commitment a custom‑tailored business suit presented to every participant. More than clothing, it represents readiness, confidence, and the beginning of their leadership journey.

As a committee, we remain committed to uplifting our youth, strengthening community partnerships, and supporting programs that build strong, purpose‑driven leaders.

Prepare to lead. Commit to growth. Step into your future with purpose.
